CCI’s Annual Fundraiser: An Evening of Culture, Impact, and Giving
In October, Creighton University’s Harper Center became a vibrant canvas in blue and red as the colors of the Dominican Republic’s flag set the stage for Chronic Care International’s (CCI) annual fundraising event, “Celebración De La República Dominicana.” Nearly 100 supporters, both from the local community and across the country, gathered for an evening that celebrated Dominican culture while raising crucial funds and awareness for CCI’s mission.
“Our goal this year,” said Dr. Hans Dethlefs, president and medical director of CCI, “was to thank our supporters who have had a life-changing impact on our patients in the Dominican Republic. Their generosity has helped set the foundation for the next phase of our work, which includes constructing a new chronic disease clinic in the DR."
In underserved areas of the Dominican Republic and other developing countries, diabetes and high blood pressure impose not only physical hardships but also deep emotional and economic strain. CCI’s patient-centered, data-driven model of disease care addresses these challenges directly by integrating education, lab testing, medication, and ongoing support to cultivate lasting change.
“While fostering self-reliance,” added Dr. Dethlefs, “CCI works hand-in-hand with patients and their families to confront the chronic disease epidemic.”
Guests enjoyed Dominican-inspired appetizers, wine, beer, modern merengue dancing, and engaging fundraising activities, including a raffle and a silent auction featuring unique Dominican treasures. The event also gave longtime supporters an opportunity to share heartfelt stories about CCI’s work.
Board member Dr. Juan Garcia, who currently serves patients in New York City, spoke about his experience as CCI’s Medical Director and his work at CCI’s Sabana Rey clinic in the Dominican Republic.
“I can tell you firsthand, CCI is a light in the middle of the darkness where access to a doctor or treatment is nearly impossible,” said Dr. Garcia. “We provide care, prescriptions, and treatment for people with diabetes and high blood pressure, two of the leading causes of preventable suffering and death. But this is not the end of the story. CCI also empowers patients with the knowledge and tools to prevent complications long term. CCI is saving lives in the DR.”
“Celebración De La República Dominicana” raised over $30,000 toward CCI’s mission. CCI depends on volunteers and tax-deductible donations. If you didn’t have a chance to attend the event but would like to contribute before the end of the year, please donate here. CCI proudly directs 91% of its funding to programs.
