The community leader at one of CCI’s clinics in the Dominican Republic, Isabel Evangelista de Marte (“Reyna”), received a prestigious national award in 2015. She received second place in the national program “Women Who Change the World,” sponsored by Banco BHD León. She was selected from among 165 nominees. Reyna received the award in recognition of her community initiatives in preventive health and chronic disease self-management. CCI warmly congratulates Reyna on her well-deserved award!

In the spirit of service, Reyna is the driving force for prevention programs, medical care and health: "Those who know me call me Doña Reyna. I come from a poor family and am the oldest of 18 siblings. Nothing stops me when I plan to help my community because it is not about giving a health service or a drug. It is to educate," she says determined.
To improve health conditions in their community through development, more than 50 promoters trained in health give continuity to programs she created over the last 31 years of her life, including a program of volunteer doctors.
She instituted a clinic with free services where more than 500 surgeries a year are performed, implemented a program for control of diabetes and hypertension that serves more than 700 patients, and introduced permanent services of medical and dental care to the community. She managed to provide water purifiers at low cost to more than 1,000 rural families, build latrines and sanitation for more than 200 homes, install 25 popular shops, carry out a program of prevention of uterine cancer and facilitated different construction projects.
