CCI - Finding Solutions for Chronic Disease
Chronic Care International (CCI) has been finding solutions for chronic disease in the developing world. Care for the problems of chronic disease is a new challenge, because it requires a “life-long walk” with patients, to ensure that they go to their doctors, take their medications, and adjust their lifestyles. CCI’s data for about 800 patients in two clinics in the Dominican Republic demonstrates a control rate in patients for diabetes of 81% (up from 50% over three years) and for high blood pressure of 56% (up from 10% over three years). These results are similar to what can be accomplished in poorer populations in the United States, but they are achieved at a much lower cost.
